The Carroll County Chamber of Commerce's 15th annual Carroll Biz Challenge is now underway, giving local entrepreneurs the opportunity to pitch new ideas, make connections, and compete for prizes worth thousands of dollars.

The challenge kicked off on February 19 at Carroll Community College, and applications are now being accepted.

Key Deadlines:

Entrepreneurs interested in pitching must submit applications by May 31 at 11:59 p.m. Applications are free and can be submitted at www.CarrollBizChallenge.com.

Selected finalists will be invited to a Meet & Greet on Thursday, July 26, at 6 p.m. at TownMall of Westminster, where each applicant gets one minute to pitch their idea. Attending is not required but is highly recommended, as the pitch is part of the evaluation process.

The Live Finale takes place on August 14 at Carroll Arts Center, with happy hour beginning at 5 p.m. and the live show starting at 6 p.m. This is where five finalists will pitch to judges and a live audience, with one grand-prize winner announced.

The Competition Format:

The Carroll Biz Challenge operates on a simple principle: dozens of entrepreneurs apply, but only five are selected to pitch their business ideas live before a panel of judges and an audience. One winner claims the grand prize.

The competition is described as "American Idol meets Shark Tank, only it's LOCAL"—a casual, high-energy way for founders to present their business concepts and get real feedback from experienced business leaders and investors.

What's at Stake:

Winners receive significant prizes totaling more than $14,000. The grand prize is $10,000 cash. Additionally, there's a $2,026 People's Choice Award and a $2,000 United Way of Central Maryland Changemaker Challenge Award.

But the value extends beyond cash. Past winners have gone on to build successful, lasting businesses. Steve Moore won the 2014 Carroll Biz Challenge with his business idea for a boutique running store, "Run Moore," located in Westminster, which has since been named twice a Top Running Store in America and moved to a larger Main Street location.

Other past winners include escape room operators, app developers, e-commerce entrepreneurs, and specialty retailers. The competition gives founders access to investor networks, media exposure, and mentorship from established business leaders.

Eligibility:

Applicants must be at least 18 years old, have a new business idea located in Carroll County, and either have started the business within the last 2 years or plan to open it within the next 2 years.

Getting Involved:

Entrepreneurs with business ideas can apply at www.CarrollBizChallenge.com. The application process is free. Aspiring founders can also seek resources from Business Solutions at Carroll Community College or work with mentors at 127 Creative, which produces the challenge.

Those interested in supporting local entrepreneurship can attend the live finale on August 14 to see the pitches, meet founders, and network with the Carroll County business community.
