The Central Carroll Recreation Council (CCRC) invites area youth to experience field hockey at no cost during two "Try It" nights this spring, marking the launch of the program's 26th season.
The free introductory sessions will be held at Sandymount Park, Field #3, on Tuesday, May 19, 2026, and Thursday, June 18, 2026, from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. No experience is required, and all interested children in kindergarten through ninth grade are welcome.
Growing Program Aims for Expansion
Last season, CCRC field hockey offered four competitive levels: a clinic group for beginners, plus separate teams for grades 3/4, 5/6, and 7/9. Program organizers are hoping to expand even further this year.
"We would like to expand and add more teams this year, so please tell your friends how much fun field hockey is," the program stated in a recent announcement. Participation was strong enough last year that coordinators are actively seeking additional volunteer coaches to accommodate growth.
What to Expect
The program emphasizes “fundamental skills, teamwork, building confidence, and self-esteem.” For those who commit to the full season, practices run twice per week starting in mid-August, with games scheduled for Sunday afternoons beginning the first Sunday after Labor Day. The season extends through the first weekend of November.
Field hockey through CCRC is a travel league—half of all games are away games—and requires a commitment to the full schedule. However, the clinic group offers a lighter option, practicing once weekly with several Saturday morning play days throughout the season.
CCRC field hockey is part of the Maryland Youth Field Hockey League, which includes recreation councils from Baltimore, Howard, Harford, and Carroll Counties, providing competitive opportunities across a strong regional network.
Coaches Needed
The program is actively recruiting volunteer coaches and offers a discount on registration fees for all coaches. Coaches are required to attend a pre-season meeting and training session, and must be available for the Open Fields evaluation night on Wednesday, August 12, 2026, from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. The number of teams fielded this season will depend directly on the number of volunteer coaches available.
How to Register
Families interested in participating in the Fall 2026 season can register online. For additional program details, visit the Central Carroll Recreation website at centralcarrollrecreation.org/field-hockey.
