Westminster residents have a new way to report problems around town and request city services without picking up the phone.
City of Westminster Mayor Dr. Mona Becker announced the launch of a new app, MyWestminsterMD, in a July 17 Facebook post. "Great news, Westminster. I am thrilled to announce the 'MyWestminsterMD' app!" she wrote, adding that she had "been playing with it for a few weeks" ahead of the release. The app is free to download from Apple's App Store or Google Play by searching for "My Westminster MD" or via a link on the city's website.
According to Becker's post, the app can be used to access city information, submit and track service requests, and find city forms. At the mayor and common council's July 27 meeting, the city's IT department elaborated on what that covers in practice: residents can request bulk trash pickup, report potholes and streetlight outages, flag code violations such as high grass, and submit anonymous tips to the police department, all without placing a phone call to city hall.
During that same July 27 meeting, city IT staff told the council the app "officially" launched about a week and a half earlier, putting the rollout in line with Becker's July 17 announcement. Staff said downloads have been strong, but registrations have lagged behind them, and that registering, rather than just downloading the app, is what unlocks the ability to submit and track requests and receive notifications back from the city.
At that meeting, council members were encouraged to direct constituents to the app rather than fielding routine service calls themselves. City staff added that residents who prefer not to use a smartphone app can still submit the same types of requests by phone or through the city's website.
