When a solitary black cat watches its island home consumed by rising floodwaters, its journey becomes far more than a survival story.
This Friday, April 17, Latvian filmmaker Gints Zilbalodis' acclaimed 2024 animated film Flow comes to the Carroll Arts Center in downtown Westminster for two shows, bringing an experience that transcends language and speaks directly to the soul.
A Film That Defies Convention
Scoring 98% from critics and 97% from fans on Rotten Tomatoes, Flow contains no dialogue, allowing the visuals and emotional resonance to take center stage.
This bold decision proves to be one of the film's greatest strengths. Instead of spoken words, the story unfolds through stunning animation and the authentic behaviors of its animal characters.
The film follows a cat as it attempts to survive in a seemingly post-apocalyptic world where water levels are rising dramatically. Along the journey, the cat encounters a capybara, a dog, a lemur, and a secretary bird, each with distinct personalities and roles to play in the group's survival.
Craftsmanship Meets Innovation
The production itself is a marvel of modern animation. Created using free and open-source software Blender over five-and-a-half years of production, the film's animation represents a significant achievement in independent filmmaking. Every frame displays meticulous attention to detail, from the subtle textures of fur to the luminous quality of water and sky.
The film's score was composed by Zilbalodis and Rihards Zaļupe, totaling 7 hours of music, of which 50 minutes made the final cut. This carefully curated soundtrack enhances the meditative, hypnotic quality of the visual journey.
Critical Acclaim
The film premiered at the 2024 Cannes Film Festival in the Un Certain Regard section and received overwhelming critical acclaim. It has won numerous awards, including the Independent Spirit Award for Best International Film, the first animated feature ever to win in any Spirit Awards category.
Flow made history at the 97th Academy Awards, becoming the first Latvian film to win and be nominated. The film claimed Best Animated Feature and earned a nomination for Best International Feature Film, cementing its status as a global phenomenon. Its Golden Globe win for Best Animated Feature Film further solidified its critical recognition
The film broke box-office records in Latvia, becoming the most-viewed film in Latvian theaters in history, and has since captured audiences worldwide.
