Standards
The standards below are written down to show readers exactly what they can expect from every story.
When Westminster Wire asks an official, agency or organization a question, the story says what was asked and what the organization said. If a question goes unanswered, the story names it, for example: "The organization did not answer a question about [topic]." A non-answer is part of the record, and readers should be able to see it.
Westminster Wire corrects errors of fact as soon as they are confirmed. Corrections are made in the story itself and noted clearly with the date of the change; a significant error is also noted in the next newsletter. To report a possible error, email [email protected] with a link to the story and what you believe is wrong.
Westminster Wire prefers to name its sources. Anonymity is granted only when information is important to the public, cannot reasonably be obtained on the record, and the source has a real reason, such as fear of retaliation, to stay unnamed. Information from an anonymous source is independently verified before it is published, and the story explains why the source was not named.
Sponsors support Westminster Wire's community sections and guides, such as Around Town and Looking Ahead. Sponsorships are never sold against news coverage, including reporting on schools, local government, elections, crime and public safety.
Sponsors have no say in what Westminster Wire covers. They do not see stories before publication, and sponsoring the Wire does not keep a story in or out. When a sponsor makes news, it is covered like anyone else. Sponsor content is clearly labeled, and Westminster Wire may decline any sponsorship.
All Westminster Wire journalism is free. Readers who choose to become Wire Supporters help fund the work, and supporting the Wire does not influence what is covered or how.
