A team of runners carrying the American flag on a 485-mile relay — from Shanksville, Pennsylvania, to the Pentagon and then on to Ground Zero in New York — will pass through Westminster on Tuesday, September 8, as part of the Tunnel to Towers Foundation's 9/11 Remembrance Run.
According to WJAC TV, the Tunnel to Towers 9/11 Remembrance Relay began Saturday morning at the Flight 93 National Memorial in Somerset County, with about 45 runners carrying an American flag from Shanksville to the Pentagon and then to Ground Zero in New York City, arriving there on the morning of September 11.
The run is organized by the Old Town Run Club, an Alexandria, Virginia-based group that, per a profile in the Alexandria Brief, will retrace the path from Shanksville to the Pentagon to Ground Zero for a third time this September, aiming to deliver $50,000 to the Tunnel to Towers Foundation.
Westminster Mayor Mona Becker confirmed on Facebook that the runners will arrive downtown around 2 p.m., escorted through town by the Westminster Fire Department, with a runner switch-out planned at O'Lordans Irish Pub. Local runners are welcome to join the group for the next leg at a 10-minute-mile pace.
The run supports Tunnel to Towers' mission of providing mortgage-free homes to catastrophically injured veterans, first responders, and the families of those killed in the line of duty.
