Hello WestminsterMD!

Westminster Wire stopped by the TownMall last night for the Carroll Biz Challenge Meet & Greet, where contestants gave 60-second pitches. Were you there?

Yesterday was also primary day in Maryland. While Carroll County backed Ed Hale in the Republican gubernatorial primary, Dan Cox won the statewide nomination and will face Gov. Wes Moore in November for a rematch of the 2022 race.

The closest local contest of the night was the State's Attorney contest, as George Psoras edged incumbent Allan Culver by just 193 votes. We have the tallies on the governor's race, sheriff, county commissioners, and more in an article below.

On the lighter side: Westminster's new Chick-fil-A is closer to reality than you might think; there's a free, outdoor adaptive movie night this Friday; and if the CCPS Outdoor School decision left you disappointed, Hashawha has some sleepaway options this summer at the same facility the school board just pulled their overnights from.

Let's get into it.

🗳️ Cox wins statewide; Psoras edges Culver; DeWees wins Sheriff

In the State’s Attorney race, Allan Culver led on early and mail-in ballots, but George Psoras flipped it once election day votes came in to jump ahead by just 193 votes out of more than 13,000 cast. Elsewhere, Jim DeWees cruised to 70% of the vote in the sheriff's race, and four Republicans fought for three delegate seats in District 5.

🍗 New Chick-fil-A has city approval, but it can't break ground yet

Westminster has approved a Chick-fil-A on the Route 140 corridor, but the restaurant can't break ground until Carroll County builds a new connector road to the site — and no timeline for that road has been announced. Westminster Wire reached out to Chick-fil-A about the plans for the current restaurant at 140 and Englar Road, once this new one is built. We’ll keep you posted!

🏕️ No Outdoor School? Hashawha has three overnight camps this summer

The Carroll County School Board ended Outdoor School overnights this month over safety concerns at Hashawha, but 4-H, the YMCA, and Carroll County Rec & Parks are all running overnight camps at the same property this summer. Spots at some of these camps are still available if your kid wants an overnight opportunity there.

In the meantime, Westminster Wire reached out to CCPS about the transparency of the board's decision-making process on Outdoor School and the rapid timeline for the change, which allowed little room for public feedback. Many of you have been asking for answers on social media. We’ll keep you posted.

That's the week. Have a tip? Submit it here.
